When was the track built?

As many developing cities, Baku decided to showcase its growth also through the Formula One stage.
The story began in 2012, when the city hosted the first GT race, and then other two in the following years on three different layouts.
In 2014 a deal with F1 was also made, Hermann Tilke was chosen to design the new course, with his brief to include as many of the city’s historic landmarks as possible.

When was its first Grand Prix?

In 2016, although it was called European GP; the race was won by Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes, who also started from pole.

What’s the circuit like?

It is a combination of wide and open sections, especially the extremely long main straight, that reminds of old style or American street circuits, and tight and twisty ones, including a 7 meters wide chicane around the medieval castle.
It has been proven that in this circuit it is possible to pass and races are usually entertaining as it is also easy to make mistakes, that cause safety cars.
Engineers are forced to choose between downforce for the technical bits and less drag to reach the top speed on the straight.

Where is it located?

On the seafront of the city, with its International airport around 25 minute drive from the city centre. (+ 40°22’14”, + 49°50’49”)
